Today on the blog I am sharing all the healthy school lunches ideas can give you. So if you pack your kids lunch for school and want to feed them healthy choices, read on!
Healthy school lunches for kids are not happening in the cafeteria no matter how hard they say “we have rules we have to follow.” I’ve worked in schools and most recently went and ate lunch with my daughter at school. What happens is the students are required to take certain items on their plate to qualify as a meal. Then they also get all the sweets and junk food as well if they have extra cash or however that works. They leave the more “nutritious” food and eat the sugar and junk food. Sometimes they do have fresh fruit but if kids have the freedom to buy the treats, that apple for sure is ending up in the trash and the sugary treat down their bodies ready for a tired kid in the afternoon for the teacher.
If you are into feeding your kids more nutritious food then keep on reading. This post is not the kind of post that makes pretty shapes out of veggies or sandwiches. I intensely don’t enjoy spending my time in the kitchen.
Inside Healthy Lunches for Kids you will learn the best lunch box options and healthy choices to put in the box. This is the the thing, kids are really hungry by the time lunch happens. This is your prime time to put healthy things in their lunch box even if it’s not their favorite. Think about it, you’ve probably had times you have eaten things that aren’t your favorite because you are flipping HANGRY! My kids’ lunch boxes come back empty. And if it doesn’t, they know their snack when they get home is the rest of their lunch before they have anything else.
Healthy school lunches can be fun when they are packed in a bento box. Kids love to see things all in little sections. Here are a couple of my favorite lunch boxes to use.
The Bentgo lunch box has compartments and is spill proof. There is a stainless steel one and a plastic one. We have the stainless steel one. It is really thin but more on the heavier side, yet not bulky.
It is stainless steel and looks like it may be a little lighter. I like it because it also comes with dip containers.
This is great if you want to pack a salad for your kids. Or get creative with the box with anything else.
When packing healthy school lunches for kids I make sure I have 4 items in there. My daughter has started packing her own lunch and she knows these are the four categories that need to be in there.
Here are some pictures of the most recent lunches I’ve created. Nothing fancy just real snapshots of my kids’ lunch boxes.
The one above has Mary’s Gone Crackers with Almond Crackers with cherries, Manchengo Cheese and sliced chicken meat.
Carrots and ranch, pretzels, chicken deli meat, strawberries and trail mix with raw cashews, Goji berries and Mulberries.
The boxes above I also added hummus to eat with the veggies. The long organic carrots taste to much better than the small ones.
The box above has quinoa, kale, cucumbers, peppers and dressing.
Salmon with cream cheese and kale wrap, tomato and cucumbers
These lunches above have black beans (in my daughters), charcuterie meats, cheese, nuts with golden berries and chocolate covered almonds with cashews and cucumbers and cutie with chips on side
Just recently I’ve discovered these Suzie’s Organic Saltines. Let me tell you……they are delicious! They are made with olive oil. They have a rich flavor and my kids love them and I eat them too. We make peanut butter on them and eat them up.
This lunch below has sliced carrots, tomatos, grapes, honey pretzel sticks, chopped turkey summer sausage, cheese stick and salami.
I hope you enjoyed Healthy Lunches for Kids post. It’s so important to feed our bodies real nutritious whole foods. My kids know that if the lunch box comes home with food in it, that is their “snack” in the afternoon and they need to complete that first before having anything else.
