Today on the blog let’s talk about healthy snacks for kids.
“Mom, can I have a snack?!” Lord help. Are they really hungry? No, probably not. You can read the method about how (not just what) I feed my kids in this post here. Today on the blog I throw at you some of the “healthier” snacks I give my kids.
Healthy Snacks for Kids
It’s easy to grab the packages snacks but those cost more and I try and keep those for “on the go.” These are also great ideas to put in your kiddo’s lunches for school. Hope this helps you out.
10 Healthy Snacks for Kids
Healthy snacks for kids #1
The first healthy snack for kids is a rice cake and add a treat nut butter and fresh or frozen fruit. You can use regular peanut butter or a sweeter treat would be to use JEM nut butter. JEM is organic and made with coconut sugar. Top some mulberries and goji berries and crunch away. Get the little sample jars of JEM to try all flavors. You can creative with these and put avocado or hummus on top instead of nut butter.
Healthy snacks for kids #2
The second healthy snack for kids is a smoothie. I start my kids on smoothies when they start solids. It’s the quickest healthiest meal of their day. I add all sorts of superfoods in them from greens, to frozen brocolli to chia seed. For all the details on specifically how I make them check out The Smoothie Habit here. Get a smoothie in your kids for some serious immediate nutrients. Hide the broccoli, carrots, cucumber, greens, liquid vitamins all in one fabulous smoothie shake!
Healthy Snacks for Kids #3
The third healthy snack for kids are cashews and dark chocolate covered almonds. I love these ones from Trader Joes and so do my kids. Most nuts have a thick chocolate coating and are mostly chocolate. These are what they say they are on the bag. They are dusted in cacoa and covered in a very think layer of dark chocolate.
Healthy snacks for kids #4
The fourth healthy snack for kids is Mary’s Gone Crackers with cheese and fruit. These are organic, gluten free and have seeds in them. I love them with hummus. My kids don’t love them but will eat them with goat cheese and fruit if hungry enough.
Healthy snacks for kids #5
The fifth healthy snack for kids are these bars. My kid love these Wipala bars. They have all different flavors. Fruit, protein and even have a cereal option made with rice and quinoa and cinnamon. These kind of snacks add up on the grocery bill so I only give these for when they are out of the house. Mostly, all other snacks in the house are fresh from the fridge.
Healthy snacks for kids #6
As mentioned above, for the most part, snacks at home are not packaged. They are out of the fridge or nuts or crackers of some sort. The sixth healthy snack for kids are apples and cashews. They are a go to in our house. Cashews have a naturally sweet taste. I will add a cheese stick to this sometimes too. My kids never turn down a cheese stick. We believe snacks should not fill them up so we also have a rule “no seconds on snacks.” If the child’s body does not FEEL hungry come meal time, they will not eat it because they just filled up on tons of carbs like graham crackers and cups of fish crackers. There have been plenty of times we have seen this in our house and we know why they aren’t eating the dinner.
Healthy snack #7
The 7th healthy snack for kids are cookies that are actually full of good stuff. Food Babes Forever Cookies. I make these and the kids and I eat the dough raw while I’m making them too. I personally love the cookie dough raw instead of cooked. It’s totally safe to eat raw because there are no eggs and sweetened with all natural sweeteners such as bananas, dates and prunes.
Healthy snacks for kids #8
The 8th healthy snack for kids are my Cookie Dough Balls. These are so good! The kids love them because of the naturally sweet cashew butter and maple syrup in them. I try and keep some of these in the freezer or fridge every couple weeks.
Healthy Snack for kids #9
This health snack for kids is quick and simple. I take a slice of deli meat and put something crunchy inside with Tzaziki sauce. The crunch is usually a sliced cucumber, carrot or picked asparagus. Great protein with veggie in one fabulous bite. Check out my reel here for details on how I make this.
Healthy Snack for kids #10
My kids love these salty crispy little things. They are delicious. I usually buy ours from Costco or Trader Joes. In the below picture he is eating Kale chips which are similar.
One last healthy snack for kids…..
These Simple Mills crackers I get a Costco along with the guacamole cups. My kids like this guac as it’s not spicy at all. Sometimes I’ve them the guacamole and have them dip carrots in it.
Thanks for reading Healthy Snacks for Kids today. I hope you got one new idea to take for yourself. I realize not every snack is for every kid; however, I do believe kids will eat when they are hungry. I think most of the eating and food is a training experience just like everything else we train our kids to do from potty training, to behavior to expectations. The language we use is key in how we set our kids up for success in food choices. Do you want an apple or goji berries? Do you want cucumber or peppers? Allow kids choices, and if they don’t choose, then you do it for them.
